Initial Consultation
The initial consultation will last up to 1 hour. This will ascertain if an assessment for Attention Deficit and
Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) is required. If assessment is deemed beneficial, you will have questionnaires to
complete
yourself and to give to someone, like your parent or someone who knew you in childhood, to complete about your
development before the assessment.
Assessment
The assessment will involve a clinical interview about your development and involve completing various standardised
tools and psychometrics assessments that will help determine whether or not you meet criteria for a diagnosis of
ADHD.
The assessment typically lasts 2 hours but may take a little longer in some circumstances. Therefore, it is
recommended
that you allow 3 hours for the assessment period.
Follow-up Sessions
For some people who receive a diagnosis of ADHD, having post-assessment support is beneficial in helping them to
understand what this means for them now and the future. It is normal to need a little time to adjust once we receive
a
diagnosis of any type. The period of adjustment, however, will be different for everyone. These sessions look at
psychological and behavioural adjustment as opposed to medication; though talking through the decision about whether
or
not to take medication or discuss the types of medication are typically explored in sessions.
If you are considering taking medication, you will need to speak to your GP who may refer you to a local service for adult ADHD so that you can be prescribed medication by a psychiatrist who will discuss the various medication options.
Dr Brown is a principal clinical psychologist (NHS band 8b) who offers supervision and consultation for psychologists working with individuals, couples and adult family members.
